Guy Fawkes Day  --  11/05/05

Remember, remember
the Fifth of November
is gunpowder treason and plot.
I see no reason
why gunpowder treason
should ever be forgot.
Knock at the door,
ring the bell.
Have you got a penny for
singing so well ?
If you haven’t got a penny
a ha’penny will do
If you haven't got a ha’penny
then God bless you !

Yes, yes, I know, those are carved pumpkins for American-style Halloween, but Halloween and Guy Fawkes Day come so close together on the calendar... besides which, I've been so neglectful of this page these past few weeks that I didn't post a Halloween entry and Jill had carved these pumpkins and so this is my chance to post them here.

So consider this a combination Halloween and Guy Fawkes Day entry...

I just checked the weather forecast and it would seem that you folks in England should have reasonable weather for tonight's Guy Fawkes fireworks displays. I get the impression (from comments that some English parents have made to me) that Halloween trick-or-treating is perhaps becoming more and more widespread for kids over there, surplanting Guy Fawkes Day. I was in Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK nine years ago and noticed supermarkets had large candy displays with Halloween themes but other than that there did not seem to be the kind of Halloween presence that is found here, but there were some huge banners up announcing the Guy Fawkes fireworks display -- much to my chagrin (because I love fireworks) my flight home left on the morning of the event so I didn't get to see a Guy Fawkes celebration.

Halloween at our house this year was a fairly low key affair, as one might expect in a household where the youngest is twenty years old. Jeremy was working but Jill was home (she had gone to a Halloween party on Saturday night) and had picked up Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (and, yes, we are looking forward to seeing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire -- just two weeks away) --- So I made some mini-pizzas for dinner and Nancy and Jill and I watched Harry Potter (all three of us having seen it in a theatre last year) interrupted every few minutes to answer the door and hand out candy.

It is a beautiful mild sunny Saturday outside -- Nancy is playing tennis, the kids are at work, and I'm going to go outside and do some yard work...

Some past Halloween entries:
2004
2003
2002
2001
In 2000 I was too busy teaching a course to have time for an entry -- 1997, 1998, 1999 have no October entries at all (in '98 I was on my way to Mexico City on Nov. 1st) -- and in 1996 I was in England.
