It's Sunny February! -- 02/01/00
  • What I'm wearing: tan dress pants, tan Florsheim shoes (with comfortable sole, don't want to wear formal wingtips if I'm on my feet all day), light green button down oxford shirt, necktie in varying shades of green and gold...
  • Where am I writing this: standing up typing at the instructor workstation in the classroom I'm using this week.
  • What this entry marks: one month of my experiment in writing an online journal (as opposed to an infrequent collection of comments)...
  • Number of entries for January: 25
  • Number of consecutive days: 18 (an unbroken run from Jan 1st through the 18th, didn't miss a day until Jan 19th.
Yeah, I suppose that sounds crazy, to talk about sunny February... yeah, I know, it's still mid-winter... BUT... in many years of upstate New York winters I figured out that if you can make it through January, the rest is easy...

We've now reach the point where today (here in Rhode Island) dawn came earlier than 7 a.m.... okay, so it was 6:59 a.m., but it's the trend that counts... and sunset didn't come until 5:00 p.m.... which is so much better than five or six weeks ago when the sun had set before quarter past four! Now I will admit that today was partly cloudy and that I've not actually been outside since around 8:00 a.m. and it is now almost quarter to six p.m., but I know there was daylight out there even if I didn't see much of it, more daylight than we have had for weeks and weeks, there is almost as much daylight now as there was back around Thanksgiving time... and the trend is toward more daylight!

Can you say "Groundhogs Day" boys and girls?

When people would say, uh-oh, if the groundhog sees his shadow we are going to have six more weeks of winter... I would reply that's wonderful news, only six more weeks of winter!

So Spring really is coming... Seed catalogs are coming in the mail (I've already received three) and the days will keep on getting longer and longer...

Maybe I should even think about going running in the morning... in a few more weeks it will be light enough to see the road at 5:30... on the other hand, that means I would have to start getting up twenty minutes or so earlier than that so I could feed the cat, stretch and warmup, and get coffee started before I left the house...
